Sunugal (su-noo-gal) catering draws on the vibrant culture and cuisine from Senegal, West Africa. The name Sunugal is derived from Wolof words (Senegal’s most common language) Sunu meaning ‘our’ and Gal which is the name of the traditional boats still in use today throughout Senegal; so together Sunugal translates to ‘our boat’.


Senegal is especially known for its unique and powerful culture of music and dance where the sound of soulful voices and the Kora (Harp) along with the energy and rhythm of the Djembe and Sabar drums feed your heart and soul. Musicians such as Youssou N’Dour, Baba Maal, Ismila Lo and Akon are only a few of the world renowned musicians coming out of Senegal.


Integral to everyday cultural life in Senegal is what is described as Teranga Senegalese. Teranga is a Wolof word meaning hospitality. The Senegalese are a vibrant and energetic nation of people who pride themselves in hospitality towards all who wish to experience Senegalese culture and cuisine.

 

Sunugal Chef, Khadim Sokhna, was born in Dakar, the pulsating capital of Senegal. Khadim’s love and passion for cooking is inspired by his experience of growing up with spicy traditional Senegalese home style cooking.  Khadim has been sharing the flavors of his traditional and contemporary cuisine throughout Melbourne for over 10 years. Khadim’s experience in specialized catering is extensive including previous businesses Teranga Senegalese, Le Boabab and Mystical le Boabab where he provided delectable culinary delights at events and parties such as the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, Victoria and St Kilda night markets, World Music Festival Adelaide and traditional Senegalese Ataya tea ceremonies at the Melbourne Art Centre.
